The Oregon Military Department is an agency of the Oregon government that oversees the armed forces of the state of Oregon. Under the direction and direction of the Governor as Commander-in-Chief, the agency is responsible for planning, establishing, and enforcing rules and procedures for the management, provision, and training of the Oregon National Guard (consisting of the Oregon Army National Guard and the Oregon Air Force National Guard), which is not active in the US. The department also maintains all military installations owned or leased by the government, including posts, camps, military reserves, and firing ranges.
The adjutant general serves as the administrative head of the military department and is the military commander of the National Guard. The military council, which consists of the adjutant general and six to six National Guard officers, serves as an advisory staff to the governor, much as the Joint Chiefs of Staff advise the president. The Army and Air National Guard wings are proportionally represented on the Council based on their current total strength.
The Oregon military division is divided into the Oregon Army National Guard and the Oregon Air National Guard. The structure of the units is shown below.

About 97 percent ($382 million) of funding for the Oregon National Guard is provided by the federal government. This does not match the significantly lower $35.9 million or 9% figure included in the department's budget. The difference can be explained by the fact that the troops' salaries and wages are paid directly by the federal government. Federal funds support 100% of troop training, Defense Department programs, basic security and fire protection, and youth programs; 75% of the logistical support for training locations; and most of the Air National Guard's facility, maintenance, and supply costs (averaging 75 to 85% based on a complex and variable schedule).
The National Guard Reserve is the government's only civil defense organization of significant size and provides emergency assistance. It is laboriously staffed by unpaid volunteers. In the event that a federal call-up of the National Guard is sufficient to prevent it from fulfilling its state role, domestic deployment of the Reserve may be ordered. Since 1989, the Oregon National Guard Reserve (ORNGR) has been officially known as the Oregon State Defense Force (ORSDF).
The ORSDF is an all-volunteer militia under the Oregon Military Department that provides reserve personnel to both the Oregon Army National Guard and the Oregon Air National Guard. It is under state jurisdiction and its members are employed only by the state of Oregon. It is not subject to federal orders. Its mission is to provide units organized, equipped and trained in the protection of life or property and the maintenance of peace, order and public safety under the authorized orders of government agencies.
Just prior to the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, 9,268 members of the Oregon National Guard had deployed to Afghanistan (1,691), Iraq (7,048), and Iraq's southern no-fly zone (529) since 2002; 20 are killed in action.
Joining The Military
In April 2015, the Oregon Military Department shut down the Oregon State Defense Force. An OMD spokesperson stated that the suspicion was temporary and that the ORSDF would return to active duty.
The military branch is based in Salem, with armories, camps, air bases, and other facilities throughout the state.
The Salem Armory Auditorium adjacent to the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem is designated as a concert venue and for shows, conventions, graduations, dances, and conferences. There are several paths to the military, including college: taking advantage of post-enrolment tuition, joining ROTC while in college, or attending military school.
Joining the military is a big decision; you should think carefully and talk to your family or a trusted adult, as well as military representatives, when considering your options.

The United States military is made up of five service divisions: Army, Navy, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. You must have a high school diploma or GED to apply. There are funds to help pay for college after you earn, such as the post-9/11 GI Bill.
There are also part-time options that allow you to attend college or hold a job while serving in the military, both of which offer money to pay for college:
ROTC is a college program that prepares you to become an officer in the United States Army while completing a 4-year degree. Scholarships are available to cover tuition and living expenses in exchange for postgraduate service.
